Charity Weekend/Donkey Derby Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th September 2011

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone that turned out to support us at our Charity Weekend. It turned out to be a ”Game of two halves”. The weather on Saturday was very sunny and we had a good turnout for our first “It’s a Knockout” themed day. This was a new venture for the Lions and our other helpers, but it turned out well and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We must thank all the teams that participated. Unfortunately our run of good fortune with the weather ran out on Sunday. The afternoon started fine and the numbers of people turning up was very good. However just before the donkey races started the rain descended. The donkeys didn’t seem to mind and a lot of people stayed on regardless. We managed to get all of the races run. So a special thanks to the hardy souls that stayed on until the end. The bad weather did have an effect on the funds raised on Donkey Derby day, probably £1,000 less than last year Although our Treasurer has not finished all his number crunching yet as we still have some monies and pledges to collect, we hope to have raised somewhere in the region of £5,500 over the weekend. We have already started to distribute the funds collected so far to the nominated local charities, cancer charities and hospices, and those charities and organisations that helped us during the day. We would also like to thank the helpers and volunteers without whose hard work we would not be able to organise such a successful fund-raising event and of course you all for your support. For those of you who like to keep their diaries up to date next year’s Charity Weekend/Donkey Derby will be on Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd September 2012

Message in a Bottle

Brentwood Lions are very pleased to be able to both support and fund locally the Message in a Bottle scheme that has been running nationally through the Lions Clubs in the UK for some time now. It is an initiative that allows your local Lions Club to bring positive help to the local community, especially to those that are perhaps more at risk due to their medical dependencies. It is you the local community that supports us so generously in our fund raising activities and it is satisfying for us to be able to give something back. We are particularly happy that the Message in a Bottle scheme is supported by the Brentwood Community Hospital in collaboration with NHS South West Essex who has been extremely helpful in joining with us to promote the scheme.

The scheme was developed to benefit older people, people not in good health, people living alone, people having life threatening conditions/allergies and people who have disabilities. The scheme ensures that the emergency services, hospital A&E department and social services have access to vital information. The kit provides a small bottle, a leaflet to be filled in and put in the bottle and two stickers

> The leaflet is filled in with the individuals medication or treatment needs
> The leaflet is put inside the bottle and the bottle put in the fridge
> One sticker is put on the door of the fridge and the other on or near the front door

Should there be an emergency and the emergency services are called, they will see the sticker at the front door and know that they need to check the fridge for the bottle. If the individual needs instant treatment or is taken to hospital the emergency services will have the information they need. Bottles with leaflets and stickers are available from the Brentwood Community Hospital. There is a poster in reception telling you about the scheme, and bottles can be obtained from the reception desk. If you need a bottle or a supply of bottles please use the Contact Us option to send an e-mail or telephone one of the Club members whose telephone number is listed on this web-site.
